About
We all have trouble sometimes getting past “How was your day” kind of questions. Yaks and Snacks gives parents conversation starters to help get things started with their kids. Sometimes our posts address current events, sometimes they address serious topics, sometimes they’re just silly and fun.
I’d also encourage you to always ask open-ended questions of your kids. Instead of How was your day? ask What did you do today? Plan to have a response if you get “nothing” in response or some other single - syllable answer. Try to have a sense of humor about it, too. Your kids aren’t deliberately trying to hide things form you (most of the time) they’re probably just in the habit of giving you that answer, just like adults have habitual answers to How are you?
Remember that getting your kids to open up is a two way street. Share with them stories about your day, and you’ll like begin to get them to open up about theirs. Finally, when they do start to talk about whatever is going on in their life… MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN and ask follow-up questions to show them that you’re listening, that you’re available to help, and that you care about thing that matter to them.
